PHOENIX – A closure of eastbound Interstate 10 near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport this weekend (Aug. 27-30) will require drivers to use a lengthy detour as crews continue initial work to remove rubberized asphalt and set up work zones for the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project.
Eastbound I-10 will be closed between the State Route 51 “Mini-Stack” interchange and US 60 (Superstition Freeway) from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday (Aug. 30). All eastbound I-10 on-ramps between Third Street (near the Deck Park Tunnel) and US 60 will also be closed. The westbound US 60 on-ramp to eastbound I-10 will be open as part of a detour route. Heavy traffic and delays can be expected.
This will be the sixth and final I-10 weekend closure within an initial series of restrictions needed to allow construction to begin on the project that will add new lanes and other significant improvements along the freeway over the next three-and-a-half years. Two currently unscheduled closures of US 60 near the I-10 interchange also are anticipated this fall. Other closures and lane restrictions for the project will be scheduled as needed.
The Arizona Department of Transportation recommends drivers, especially those catching a flight at Sky Harbor Airport, plan for anticipated heavy traffic and allow at least 30 minutes of extra travel time. Detour routes include:
- I-10 Detour: Drivers on eastbound I-10 in the downtown Phoenix area will exit onto eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) and travel east to southbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway). Drivers will continue south on Loop 101 to westbound US 60 to access eastbound I-10 beyond the closure. A detour map and video are available at I10BroadwayCurve.com.
- From southbound I-17 near Sky Harbor Airport: Use westbound I-10 to eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to southbound Loop 101 and westbound US 60 to access eastbound I-10 beyond the closure.
- Sky Harbor Airport Traffic: From southbound I-17, exit at 16th Street and turn left (north) to reach eastbound Buckeye Road, then follow signage into the airport. Drivers also can use the airport exits from westbound I-10, such as Buckeye Road, or from eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway). The airport exits from north- or southbound SR 143 also will be available, but drivers should allow extra travel time.
- Travel in or from the West Valley: I-10 drivers can consider detouring on southbound and eastbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) to bypass the I-10 closure and connect to east- or westbound I-10 near Chandler Boulevard.
ADOT urges drivers to follow designated detour routes, which will keep traffic on the state highway system in the Valley. Many local roads and streets in nearby cities and towns are not designed or constructed to handle interstate freeway traffic.
Specific ramps to eastbound I-10 that will be closed this weekend include the ramps from southbound SR 51, westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway), southbound I-17 and southbound SR 143. The southbound I-17 on-ramps at Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue will be closed, as will the eastbound I-10 on-ramps at Third, Seventh and Jefferson streets; McDowell, Buckeye and Broadway roads; and 24th, 32nd and 40th streets.
You can access real-time traffic information on the free project app, The Curve, which is available for iPhone and Android users.
About the Project: The I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project is ADOT’s largest urban freeway reconstruction project in Maricopa County. Work will occur on 11 miles of east- and westbound I-10 between Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) and I-17, and includes the “Broadway Curve” between Baseline Road and 40th Street. Additional work will occur on east- and westbound US 60 between I-10 and Hardy Drive and on north- and southbound State Route 143 between I-10 and the southern end of the SR 143 bridge over the Salt River. The project is funded in part by a dedicated, half-cent sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004.
