The transition from community college to a four-year university has become much simpler with the Bridge to Bachelors Degree program that will begin this fall in Colorado.
All 13 community colleges in Colorado’s Community College system will offer a simple and guaranteed transition to nine universities. Morgan Community Colleges will offer the program to incoming students this fall.
“What the Bridge to Bachelors Degree program does is allows us to work alongside in partnership with one of those four year colleges or universities and the student to ensure that the student is being advised and guided so they have the credits that they will need in order to transfer to that desired four-year program,” MCC Director of Communications, Marketing and Recruitment Ariella Gonzales-Vondy said.
The program isn’t degree specific and lets students take care of many of their general education requirements before transferring to Colorado Mesa University, Colorado State University, Colorado University in Denver, Colorado University in Colorado Springs, Fort Lewis College, Johnson and Lewis College, Metropolitan State University of Denver, Regis University or Western Colorado University.
Students can still major in specific subjects like marketing, education or agriculture, but can also graduate with a degree in general studies and declare a major once reaching a 4-year university.
“When a student signs up to get their associate’s degree they can have a specific degree program, say business or something that they want or are interested in,” Gonzales-Vondy said. “But sometimes if they haven’t declared a major this will give them an Associates of General Studies and that associate’s degree would still transfer.”
Gonzales-Vondy said the benefits of going to community college prior to a university are vast. Not only are the classes the same, they are taught by highly qualified teaching staff in a more responsive learning environment.
“I think the biggest difference is that you have a personalized experience when you come to community college because they’re smaller class sizes and you have more of an opportunity to get to know the faculty,” Gonzales-Vondy said.
Additionally, students can save up to $10,000 in tuition when compared to universities, and get acclimated to higher education in the process.
“We’ve had students who after coming to MCC and then transferring to a 4-year University have come back and talked about how MCC actually prepared them,” Gonzales-Vondy said. “They felt that they were better prepared so, when they did go to university and there are 200 students sitting in the lecture hall, that they had some of those Kinks worked out already because they were able to have the opportunity with smaller class sizes and overall more support through MCC.”
Though the program won’t begin until this Fall, but so far students have responded well to the program’s promises.
“They’re excited about this and there is interest because it takes all of the guesswork out of the application and registration process,” Gonzales-Vondy said.
The program will be available to all first-time students who maintain at least a 2.0 GPA and complete an Associates of Arts or Science.
