Boulder County recorded 15 additional coronavirus cases on Thursday, nine of which were reported between ages 20 and 29.

The county now has a total of 1,328 cases and 395 of those affect 20-to 29-year-olds — the age group to which last week’s surge in cases was attributed, with several traced back to early June Black Lives Matter protests and parties at Boulder’s University Hill neighborhood.

Hospitalizations remained at 174 on Thursday. There are now 536 recoveries, 110 disease investigations in progress and the number of deaths remains at 71.

Wednesday saw a 35 case increase, 25 of which were 20- to 29-year olds. After reviewing the cases, Boulder County Public Health did not find a particular event or trigger that they could identify as the cause of the increase, said Chana Goussetis, spokesperson for the department.

Still, she stressed the importance of social distancing and face coverings.

“It is estimated that up to 40% of people with COVID-19 do not show symptoms,” she said. “It is important for all of us to be thoughtful about all of our activities.”

The health department recommends that residents ask themselves the following questions when deciding which activities they are comfortable participating in:

  • How many other people will be participating in this activity?
  • Is the activity outside?
  • Can I put distance between myself and others?
  • How long will the activity take?
  • Do I feel 100% healthy?
  • How will I get there? Biking, walking, and driving in a car are all safer than public transportation.
  • Do I live with someone who is more vulnerable to COVID-19, and would be at high risk if I happened to bring the virus home?
  • What is the value of this activity to me versus the risk I am taking?

Data released from the county on Thursday showed that Wednesday’s five-day average of new daily cases was 15.8, almost half of June 18’s five-day average of 28.

Statewide, there are 31,479 cases, which is up 324 from Wednesday. Of those, 5,386 have been hospitalized. There have been 1,669 deaths and 1,475 of those were linked to the virus. Of Colorado’s more than 5.7 million population, 299,772 people have been tested.
