What is the difference between a third dose and a booster shot of the COVID vaccine? - NJ.com

datangep.blogspot.com

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced recently that many Americans will be able to receive booster shots.

That came after it was announced that immunocompromised Americans will be eligible to receive a third dose of the mRNA vaccine even sooner.

So it is no surprise that many Americans are wondering what the difference is between the two.

The main differences between a booster shot and a third dose of a COVID-19 shot is not due to differences in dosage, but differences in eligibility and timing.

The CDC recommends third doses for immunocompromised people at least four weeks after they receive their second vaccine of the Pfizer or Moderna mRNA shots.

Booster shots, on the other hand, are going to be recommended for anyone who has received a full course of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

Even then, these individuals are only eligible to receive a booster shot eight months after they received their second dose of the vaccine.

The moderately to severely immunocompromised are first in line to receive a third shot.

Booster shots are going to be recommended for certain groups starting in September, especially most health care workers and nursing home residents who were among the first to receive the vaccine.

The booster shots were also created to make sure immunity does not wane over time as opposed to the third vaccine dose, which is meant for people who have not built strong enough immunity after the first vaccine dose.

The Associated Press reports that it is unclear if the content of the booster shots will be the same as the first two doses.

Health officials said people who received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine will also probably need extra shots. But they said they are awaiting more data and have yet to work out the details.
