A 32-year-old woman died after being struck by a Brooklyn-bound 2 subway train on Saturday morning, after she was spotted standing between cars on the moving train, police said.

The incident happened just before 1 a.m. on a number 2 subway train as it was pulling into the 96th Street/Broadway Station station. A witness told the police that he saw the woman smoking between cars. She lost her footing as the train headed into the station, falling between the cars and subsequently struck by one of the subway cars, according to police. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The subway system continues to indefinitely close between 1 and 5 a.m. daily so crews can deep clean subway cars, a policy the MTA made during the onset of the pandemic.

The MTA bars riders from walking or riding between subway cars that are in motion, citing the danger in doing so. They've consistently warned against the dangers of walking between subway cars following a string of deaths in 2018 related to people falling onto the tracks from moving subway cars. Among those fatal incidents was one on May 29th, 2018 where a man riding between subway cars slipped and fell under a Manhattan-bound train that was pulling up to the 63rd Drive/Rego Park Station, according to police at the time.

On December 26th that year, a 25-year-old died while walking and falling between subway cars at the 23rd Street 1/2 train station in Chelsea.

The NYPD did not provide statistics over the number of subway deaths related to falling between subway cars.
