A Kingwood teen was the youngest of more than 11,000 graduates from the University of Houston’s December class.
Salenah Cartier, 17, received a bachelor of science degree in psychology through the UH College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. In addition to a bachelor’s degree, Cartier also earned a certificate in Corporate Entrepreneurship from the C.T. Bauer College of Business.

Due to the coronavirus, the service was held virtually on Dec. 17. In the backdrop of this graduating class was Hurricane Harvey and the COVID-19 pandemic, but despite these difficulties, the students who graduated in the spring, summer and fall semester of 2020 were honored through this virtual ceremony.
According to a press release from the university, Cartier’s mother instilled values such as self-worth and creativity. She is one of four children in a single-parent household.
“My mom would always say you have to figure out what you want to do in life and how you want to make an impact on the world,” Cartier said in the press release.
Cartier received her high school diploma through a homeschooling program at 14 in addition to taking dual credit classes at Lone Star College-Kingwood, where she received her associate of science degree.

In January, Cartier plans to return to UH in pursuit of a master’s degree in the College of Education for the curriculum and instruction program. According to the press release, her goal is to become an educator and policymaker to help those in need and show that “anything is possible and to not let their circumstances get in the way.”
In the spring 4,307 bachelor’s degrees, 881 master’s degrees, 137 doctoral degrees, 402 professional degrees were earned and in the summer and fall semesters 4,170 bachelor’s degrees, 885 master’s degrees, 249 doctoral degrees, 40 professional degrees were earned.
