The Music City Bowl matchup between Iowa and Missouri is "highly unlikely" to happen, according to a Twitter report Sunday afternoon by Peter Baugh of The Athletic. In a tweet, Baugh said that the Tigers are experiencing issues with the coronavirus amid a recent "uptick."

Iowa saw coronavirus cases increase this past Monday, pausing in-person team activities. However, the No. 15 Hawkeyes (6-2) were still preparing as planned for a 4 p.m. ET game against Missouri (5-5) this coming Wednesday at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.

"Just excited about an opportunity, anytime you get to extend the season," first-year Tigers head coach Eliah Drinkwitz said last Sunday. "Our seniors have earned that opportunity, for us to continue to play — to play a great opponent, Iowa, 6-2, ranked 15 on the season, in an NFL stadium and great city like Nashville ... what an awesome deal. Another positive for us in this is our guys are going to get a chance to go be home with their families for the holidays, come back and play a game, and they're going to get to be home with them again for New Year's (Day). So this game fit perfectly in the window, an opportunity we wanted for us as a team in order to maximize the opportunity to play but also give our guys an opportunity to be at home and see their families."

Drinkwitz was asked last Sunday about potential concerns of having enough players.

"We've got to follow protocols, no different than we have been since we started on July 15 and even prior when these guys came back voluntarily June 6, so we're going to have to follow protocols, we're going to have to wear masks and practice social distancing while we're traveling, but that's what we've been doing for a long time," Drinkwitz said.

Iowa athletic director Gary Barta and head coach Kirk Ferentz issued a joint statement on the Hawkeyes' status this past Monday.

"As I shared this morning, last week we experience an increase in positives cases within out football program," Barta said. "Our student-athletes returned to testing today and based on additional positive tests and contact tracing, our medical team has made the decision to pause in-person activities for a minimum of five days. We will continue to follow the Big Ten Conference medial protocol and participate in daily rapid antigen testing. Based on the information we have available today, we feel confident in our ability to participated in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl."

"Late this afternoon I met with our Player Leadership Group and they overwhelmingly want to play in the bowl game," Ferentz added. "We will continue to prepare and put our bowl game plan together using the technology we will have available. While our first priority is the health and safety of our players and staff, the goal is to play and compete on Dec. 30."
