Former Cowboys quarterback and current Fox broadcaster Troy Aikman appeared on 96.7 FM/1310 AM The Ticket [KTCK-AM] recently. Here are some of the highlights:
How different are the eagles now that Jalen Hurts is at quarterback instead of Carson Wentz.
Aikman: “Well they’ve looked pretty good the last few weeks. You see more energy from them, you see a belief, more confidence. They’re playing better, obviously, on the offensive side of the ball than they were. Jalen brings an element that Carson wasn’t. It would be like Jalen coming in and taking my place if I was quarterback. The ability to help out that offensive line, and get outside the pocket and create some plays. It has all been really, really good.
“I think a lot of Carson as a person and what it means to him, how important the game is and how much he enjoys playing for the Philadelphia Eagles… but I think he just got into a situation where he was just trying to do so much. He was just putting so much pressure on himself and I do think, regardless of whatever it was that he was saying, I do think he was hearing what was being said and that only compounded the problems he was having. For a young player to come in and not [have] much pressure on him — and the team in general because they were losing so many games — it has been a really good fit.
“And I agree: it has been a far different Philadelphia team with Jalen Hurts than it has been with Carson Wentz. I mean they’re [games] are all tough right now, when you’re Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington or New York all these games are hard. All these teams are struggling. But Dallas has confidence as well, having won two games in a row.”
What can Dallas do against Philadelphia’s decimated offensive line?
Aikman: “Well I don’t know what Philadelphia has now in the lineup. As far as what they’ve had before, we’ve had them earlier in the season and you’re right, they have been decimated up front. I haven’t had them in a few weeks, so I don’t know if they are healthy up front with some of their starters, at least, back or not. If they are still beat up then it is a game, and it always is each week, where the guys for Dallas have to win in the trenches. They have to be able to take advantage of some of that.
“But, that’s what I was saying: team were able to do that against Carson Wentz. Now you got Jalen Hurts. If you don’t rush with some discipline and he gets outside the pocket, now you’ve got your secondary in a real bind. That’s been a big weapon for them and certainly for Jalen Hurts. And then with his ability to run the football and the way they’ve committed to running the ball a little bit more, they’ve done a good job in that regard also.
“These are teams that know each other really well, it’s obviously a different style right now, but it is interesting that as many problems as they were having and everything that was being said about Doug Pederson and was his job in jeopardy and all that — which is crazy to me. But they stuck with a franchise quarterback that they paid a lot of money to and I think that if he was not drafted where he was or as highly compensated as he was that move would’ve been made a lot sooner than what it was. It has been made, we’ve seen the changes in what the difference has been.”
