Coronavirus Update
Tensions rise between Syracuse landlords and tenants: The coronavirus pandemic decimated the economy, leaving many renters unable to pay landlords, many of whom are then unable to pay their mortgages or property taxes. Many went months without federal or state aid, creating tensions. A Valley Drive landlord cut the power to a woman’s apartment on one of the hottest days of the year in July: “I can’t believe he did that.”
4-year-old boy dies after fighting Covid: Xavier Harris, 4, of Utica, died the morning after Christmas after being hospitalized with Covid-19. A family friend said Xavy’s mother wants people to know her son died after coming down with the virus and that Covid doesn’t only kill elderly people or those in nursing homes. She wants people to take it seriously, wear their masks and socially distance.

What’s trending
New York’s new laws for 2021: A new year means changes from Albany, including closing loopholes in a property tax law that cost taxpayers millions of dollars, setting requirements for when election recounts should occur, providing greater protections for consumers and even a law that affects the dead. Here’s what you need to know.
Scary CNY swatting prank: A man called Utica police early Tuesday, claiming he shot his mother and planned to kill his three kid sisters, plus had a pipe bomb. New York State Police responded in force with bomb squad and SWAT team members standing by -- but it was all a hoax.
2 charged with murder in connection with year-old homicide: Two men were arraigned Tuesday on charges of second-degree murder in connection with a homicide in Oneida County back in early January. Jalil D. Pacheco and Isaiah A. Moore, both 20, of Utica, are accused of killing 20-year-old Quaheem Holland; Pacheco was located in Syracuse on Monday.
Sports
A VERY DIFFERENT COLLEGE BASKETBALL SEASON: Syracuse basketball is playing well, with a record of 6-1, but Covid-19 has changed everything. Players and staff wear face coverings, spread out on bench seats, have their own towels and water bottles with their numbers on them, and, of course, no fans in the Dome. See more photos. Syracuse in NFL playoffs: Syracuse native Latavius Murray and former SU football player Alton Robinson are both headed to the NFL playoffs, and five other Orange alumni could join them. Who’s in the hunt?
