I-10BroadwayCurveAsphaltRemovalWorkADOTaug2021a.jpgPHOENIX - Drivers with travel plans on westbound Interstate 10 in Phoenix should prepare for the fifth in a series of weekend closures as the Arizona Department of Transportation continues initial work on the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project.

Westbound I-10 will be closed between State Route 143 and Interstate 17 from 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, to 4 a.m. Monday, Aug. 23. The ramp from southbound SR 143 to westbound I-10 will be closed, as will the westbound US 60 HOV ramp to westbound I-10. The westbound I-10 on-ramps at Elliot, Baseline and Broadway roads and 40th and 32nd streets will be closed. The westbound US 60 on-ramp at Mill Avenue also will be closed.

Detour: Drivers on westbound I-10 can exit to northbound SR 143 and use westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to access westbound I-10 beyond the closure. Drivers on westbound US 60 and from other areas of the East Valley should consider using the northbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) to westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway).

Airport traffic: Use exits for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport from SR 143 or Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway).

Drivers on westbound I-10 traveling to the West Valley can bypass the work zone by using the westbound/northbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) and connecting with I-10 at 59th Avenue.

Workers are setting up temporary concrete barriers and removing the rubberized asphalt along the 11-mile work zone on I-10 between the Loop 202 (Santan/South Mountain freeways) and I-17. This weekend’s closure will allow crews to complete work-zone setup and asphalt removal on westbound I-10.

The last weekend closure for this initial stage of work is scheduled along eastbound I-10 between SR 51 (Piestewa Freeway) and US 60 from late Friday, Aug. 27, to early Monday, Aug. 30. ADOT anticipates two closures of US 60 for similar work-zone setup and rubberized-asphalt removal will be scheduled this fall.

Dozens of work-zone and travel-lane shifts will occur during the three-year construction project. To limit pavement damage caused by multiple applications and removals of temporary lane striping, the top layer of asphalt is being removed at this initial stage of work. Crews are also inspecting the concrete pavement and repairing cracks before the final road surfaces are put down when construction is completed in late 2024.

ADOT advises drivers to expect heavy traffic and allow at least 30 minutes of extra travel time. Motorists should use detour routes on the state highway system and avoid using local roads and streets which are not designed or constructed to handle high volumes of interstate traffic.

Real-time traffic information and updates are available on the free project mobile app, The Curve.

About the Project

The I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project is ADOT’s largest urban freeway reconstruction project in Maricopa County. Work will occur on 11 miles of east- and westbound I-10 between Loop 202 and I-17, and includes the “Broadway Curve” between Baseline Road and 40th Street. Additional work will occur on east- and westbound US 60 between I-10 and Hardy Drive and on north- and southbound State Route 143 between I-10 and the southern end of the SR 143 bridge over the Salt River. The project is funded in part by a dedicated, half-cent sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004.
