Drivers should plan for the latest weekend closure of Interstate 10 in Phoenix, and more than half a dozen on-ramp closures, as the Arizona Department of Transportation continues initial work on the Broadway Curve Improvement Project.

Eastbound I-10 will be closed between State Route 51 (Piestewa Freeway) and 40th Street from 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, to 4 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16. Ramps from southbound SR 51, westbound Loop 202 and southbound I-17 connecting to eastbound I-10 also will be closed.

Other weekend ramp closures include:

  • The southbound I-17 on-ramps at Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue; and
  • The eastbound I-10 on-ramps at Third, Seventh and Jefferson streets; McDowell and Buckeye roads; and 24th and 32nd streets.

Crews are continuing to remove the top one-inch layer of rubberized asphalt from I-10 and set up temporary concrete barriers to create safe work zones for the project.

A number of detours along the state highway system will be in place. ADOT advises motorists to expect heavy traffic and allow extra travel time. Detour routes include:

  • Drivers on eastbound I-10 and southbound SR 51 can detour to eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) and travel to southbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) before using westbound US 60 (Superstition Freeway) to access eastbound I-10 beyond the closure.
  • Drivers on southbound I-17 (approaching I-10 at the “Split” interchange near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport) can detour to westbound I-10 and detour on eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to southbound Loop 101 and westbound US 60 to access eastbound I-10 beyond the closure.
  • Airport Traffic: From southbound I-17, exit at 16th Street, turn left (north) and use eastbound Buckeye Road and follow signage for Sky Harbor Airport. Drivers can also use the airport exits from westbound I-10, such as Buckeye Road; from eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway); or from SR 143.
  • Drivers in the West Valley can bypass the closure by using the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway and connecting with eastbound I-10 near Chandler Boulevard.

Real-time traffic information and updates will be available on the free project mobile app, The Curve. ADOT anticipates construction will begin later this summer or fall and continue through late 2024.
