GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The University of Nebraska Medical Center has teamed up with Central Community College to provide its nursing students, who have an associates degree, the chance to earn a bachelor’s degree. Registered nurses from the community college can take online courses to complete their Bachelor of Science in nursing.
Students have access to these classes whenever and wherever to make earning a degree convenient for their personal schedule. This partnership also means that registered nurses living in central Nebraska don’t have to make that move to a bigger city to further their degree.
Sarah Kort, Dean of Health for Central Community College, stressed the importance of having this partnership with UNMC.
“We’ve recognized the value and the need to keep nurses working right now,” Kort said. “Nurses are a critical part of the health care community and so, allowing students to work through a program that they can do classes at their own pace, at their own time and online, is just a win for everyone.”
Courses are offered in both eight-week and 16-week sessions. The online bachelor’s degrees can be completed with 20 credit hours, meaning a student can transform their degree in a year.
Scott Miller, senior director of college communications for Central Community College, said offering the program in central Nebraska will help with a number of items.
“That helps the local economy, it helps them with their support system, their family, they don’t have to leave that aside,” Miller said. “They don’t have to go to Omaha and do all their work. They can do that here, and their clinicals and so, they’re able to you know, contribute to their communities and ideally stay in those communities where the nursing shortages are happening.”
UNMC plans to recruit and admit the CCC nursing students into the new program.
