Syracuse's summer sizzles: our history of hitting 100 degrees - Spectrum News

datangep.blogspot.com

Summer hasn't even started yet, but the heat is already on.

What You Need To Know

  • Highs in the 100s are not common in Syracuse

  • The record for the hottest temperature in Syracuse is 102 degrees

  • July of 1936 was a remarkable month regarding 100 degree-days

  • The last time we had triple-digit heat was in 2012

Our first 90-degree day of 2021 occurred May 20, almost one week earlier than last year.

Regardless of when we reach 90 degrees, it's a milestone that is expected each year.

One feat that is not so easily achieved is triple-digit heat. That's right, we're talking about temperatures that reach and surpass 100 degrees.

How common is it?

Not as common as you might think. With records dating back to 1902 in Syracuse, there have only been 10 instances of temperatures climbing to 100 degrees or higher.

The hottest day on record

July 9, 1936 holds the record for the hottest temperature ever reported in Syracuse. On this day, we hit a scorching 102 degrees!

A more in-depth look at July 1936

This was a historic month for a number of reasons.

Before July 9, 1936, the hottest temperature on record was 101 degrees. Surprisingly, that was accomplished just the day before on July 8, 1936.

This became a three-day stretch of triple-digit heat with the final day being July 10, reporting a high of 101 degrees.

Even the nights were stifling, with lows as warm as the low 80s.

Unfortunately, significant relief did not come quickly. It was a week-long heatwave, lasting from July 7 to July 13.

Not only is this the only month to experience three consecutive 100-degree days, it's the only year on record to have more than one 100-degree day.

Recent history

After the summer sizzle of 1936, Mother Nature must have decided that we needed a break. 100 degrees was not achieved again until the new millennium.

It would take 65 years for Syracuse to reach the century mark again, which has turned out to be our longest break between 100-degree days.

August 9, 2001 had a high of 100 degrees. This is the first 100 degree-day that many of us have experienced or can remember in Syracuse.

Since then, there have been three more instances of triple-digit heat, most recently on July 17, 2012.

Based on the trends we've seen in past years and discounting the anomalous 65-year stretch, it seems as though we're about due for another day in the 100s. Will it happen this summer? Only time will tell.
