A bachelor’s degree can add a lot of money to your annual earnings in Alabama, but the amount depends on where you live.
In general, a bachelors degree could be worth as much as $20,600 per year in Alabama - meaning the median annual earnings of a person with a bachelor’s degree are roughly $20,600 higher than someone with only a high school diploma. That’s according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.
But in some counties, the difference is even greater.
A bachelor’s degree is worth the most in Madison County, home to Huntsville and one of the wealthiest and best educated counties in the state.

In Madison County, the median earnings of someone 25 years old or older with a bachelor’s degree are just over $61,000 per year - the highest in the state. That’s nearly $33,000 more than someone of the same age living in the same county, but with only a high school diploma.
A bachelor’s degree is already worth a lot in Madison, but a graduate degree is worth even more. The median earnings for people 25 or older with a graduate or professional degree in Madison County are more than $87,000 per year - again, the highest in the state. That’s about $25,800 more per year than someone in Madison with just a bachelor’s degree.
In Jefferson County, the most populous county in the state and home to Birmingham, someone with a bachelor’s degree could expect to earn around $52,000 per year. That’s about $22,100 per year more than someone in Jefferson County with only a high school diploma.
Meanwhile, in Shelby County, just south of Jefferson and the county with the highest percentage of bachelor’s degrees, someone with a bachelor’s degree will earn an average of $59,500 per year. That’s roughly $22,700 more per year than someone in the same county with a high school diploma.
