LeAnna Roberts is just like any other 14-year-old girl who enjoys listening to music, hanging out with friends and participating in other social activities.

But Roberts is anything but ordinary in the classroom because not only is she nearly a high-school graduate, she’s also a couple of months away from an associate’s degree.

She’ll get her high school diploma from Central High School in June because she finished her general requirements early, and she’s picking up her associate’s in biology from Shelton State Community College.

While Roberts said it was sometimes difficult to juggle her responsibilities, she remained focused and kept her eye on the prize.

“It was a lot of self-learning involved and also balancing extracurricular activities and a social life of course,” she said. “There were hardships, but it was rewarding in the end.”

Completing high school with a 4.45 GPA, she served as freshman class president, was on the varsity tennis and cheerleading teams and was a violinist and pianist for the University of Alabama’s Community Music School.

Roberts began taking dual-enrollment classes at Shelton State her freshman year. She earned a 3.9 GPA at the college and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society.

Roberts said she has been passionate about science since she was a young girl and solidified her love for medicine through volunteering more than 100 hours at DCH Regional Medical Center.

She said she plans to attend the University of Alabama in the fall, where she will pursue a bachelor’s degree in biology.

“After I graduate from there, I plan to get my master’s degree in public health,” Roberts said. “I want to be an orthopedic spine surgeon.”

Even though she will be one of the youngest students on campus, Roberts said she knows she will be able to handle the duties and responsibilities of being a full-time college student.

“I think that I’ve already kind of proven myself by graduating this year and getting an associate’s degree,” she said. “I can handle whatever comes my way.”
