The person killed in a Saturday crash in which a Denver fire truck T-boned a car has been identified Wednesday, according to a Denver Office of the Medical Examiner news release.

Monica Charles, 38, was killed in the crash at the intersection of East Speer Boulevard and North Broadway that also left two others critically injured.

The fire crew was responding to an emergency call about smoke in a building and had their emergency lights and sirens on when the fire truck struck the driver’s side of a small two-door sedan with three people inside, Capt. Greg Pixley said. The sedan was traveling south on North Broadway, and the fire truck was headed northwest on Speer.

Charles was the driver of the sedan. The 38-year-old died from blunt force injuries, the autopsy revealed.

After the collision, the firefighters immediately “recognized the severity” of the crash and began working to free victims from the sedan and provide care, said Denver Fire Chief Desmond Fulton.

Fulton promised transparency into the crash investigation. Investigators are looking into whether the fire truck’s system for changing traffic lights was working and whether the light at the intersection had changed to green as the fire crew approached.

Denver police, who are conducting the investigation, did not immediately respond Wednesday when asked for further updates about the case.
