GRAND RAPIDS, MI – A new program launching at Calvin University this winter will allow students to earn a master of arts degree in media and strategic communication within one year.
The program, launching in February, will blend theory, practice and ethics, according to a news release by Calvin. University officials said the degree is geared toward recent college graduates and mid-career professionals looking to advance their careers.
“Corporations used to provide training for junior employees, but most big national companies have done away with that,” said Greg Braun, co-director of the program, in a prepared statement.
“So new graduates are expected to hit the ground running. It’s the age-old conundrum: you need experience to be hired, but how do you get experience without being hired?”
Braun will help run the program with a team of industry leaders with expertise in public relations and media production. Braun has decades of experience in corporate communications, having worked for brands like Chevrolet, Toyota, Starbucks and United Airlines, according to the news release.
The advertising leader has also created work for the Super Bowl, the Oscars and the FIFA World Cup, university officials said. With his experience, Braun will lead the new masters program to help fill the gap for young professionals.
“It’s not enough to just have the necessary expertise,” Braun said. “Ethical practice is becoming more important than ever before. Consumers want brands that conduct themselves in ethical ways – and brands must respond by making ethical practice part of their deliverables.”
The program will offer a “deep dive” into subjects like branding, scriptwriting and strategic communication, and then allow students to apply their skills in Calvin’s new media agency, which will solve communication problems for real-world clients, the release said.
Braun said the agency will help students feel confident in the skills they learn in the classroom.
“Our goal is that our graduates will not only be able to create, but they will also be able to lead the creative process,” he said. “That’s a wonderful space for a graduate to be in. "
Calvin University is currently accepting applications for the master’s degree program for the 2021 fall semester, according to the release. Interested applicants can find more information about the program at https://calvin.edu/go/mmsc.
