BIG RAPIDS, MI – A new social justice degree program at Ferris State University will allow students to learn about the causes and consequences of social injustice and inequality starting next fall.
Students can sign up for classes in the Bachelor of Science in social justice program beginning with the fall 2021 semester, according to a news release by the university. A degree in social justice can be used in a variety of careers in health, government, education and criminal justice, university leaders said.
“Our Social Justice graduates will be important members of law firms and criminal justice programming, along with government and educational institutions,” said Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Bobby Fleischman in a prepared statement.
“We will enter this program with great anticipation of the opportunities that will come for these students and the impact they can have as agents of change in our society.”
The program was approved by the Ferris State Board of Trustees at its October 2020 meeting. The curriculum will include courses in the colleges of Arts, Sciences and Education, Business and Health Professions.
The interdisciplinary program will be rooted in history, teaching students about past social justice movements and their impact to society. Students will also learn about many of the social differences in society and how to connect what they have learned to their own society to effect change.
Fleischman said the program will be in line with the vision of university founder Woodbridge Ferris, who challenged Ferris State “to make the world a better place.”
“Our Social Justice degree is very consistent with the mission, vision and values of Ferris,” Fleischman said in the prepared statement.
“The timing of this program’s inauguration is good, as it will allow students to connect what they have learned to their society and become agents of change.”
The program comes on the heels of nationwide demonstrations against systemic racism and police brutality this spring and summer following the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died May 25 after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.
