Embedding Certifications Into Bachelor's Degrees - Inside Higher Ed

datangep.blogspot.com

A new report describes a framework for embedding industry certifications into bachelor's degree programs, an approach that could increase the job-market value of some degrees.

The report is based on a project led by Workcred, a nonprofit organization, in partnership with the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU), and the University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA). The groups sought to identify opportunities, challenges and practical examples associated with integrating high-quality industry certifications into bachelor’s degree programs. The project featured meetings focused on the industry sectors of health care, cybersecurity and manufacturing, as well as one on the liberal arts.

"While this project served to illuminate current models and practices, the project team believes there is potential to continue this work by testing certification-degree pathway models and building an active community of practice," the report concluded. "By continuing this work, there can be a significant impact on the attainment of relevant, industry valued, postsecondary credentials for learners of all types."
