Northwood University’s Richard DeVos Graduate School of Management announces the launch of a highly-specialized Master of Science in Human Resources (MSHR) degree program in January 2022.

“Given the speed and complexity of changes taking place in business across the world, human resources (HR) professionals are on the front lines of organizational strategy, performance, and innovation more than ever before,” said Dr. Lisa Fairbairn, Dean of the DeVos Graduate School. “Our program is designed to help strengthen and bolster their positions as leading subject matter experts and strategic influencers in organizations.”

The DeVos MSHR is a 12-course, 36-credit-hour program delivered fully online in two years. Students will take nine core HR classes in both traditional and emerging HR-related areas. Examples include compensation, employment law, and workforce planning as well as data analytics, HR in the virtual world, and health, wellness, and safety from a post-Covid perspective.

“We designed this program in collaboration with a variety of stakeholders. This allowed us to focus on both the current challenges facing HR professionals, as well as the long-term changes taking place in the industry,” said Dr. Nicole Runyon, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, who designed the program in conjunction with DeVos faculty. “For example, one of the program’s key outcomes emphasizes diversity, equity, and inclusion. That means these core principles are embedded throughout the entire program, not just in a single class. This is quite unique and allows for connections and integrations across classes as the external environment evolves.”

Students will also choose two electives from the DeVos Graduate School program portfolio, which includes degrees in business administration, organizational leadership, finance and data analytics. Additionally, as part of Northwood’s commitment to experiential learning, students will complete their degree with an applied capstone project conducted in a real organization.

With career prospects on the rise, HR managers rank in the top 50 most in-demand profession for the next decade, according to the Wall Street Journal and Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data. “HR professionals need incredibly current, relevant, and robust graduate educational options to help develop the capabilities required in the future. Our program fills this need as we believe it is one of the most innovative and actionable HR degrees on the market today,” said Fairbairn.

“In addition, our driving philosophy of The Northwood Idea – rooted in individual freedom and responsibility – is particularly relevant to HR professionals. Empowering people to innovate and create while also holding themselves and each other accountable is at the heart of Northwood University. The DeVos MSHR is unique in that our learning approach helps to cultivate these behaviors in students who then go back and apply them at their own organizations,” added Fairbairn.
