Should the city of Ocala provide a shuttle service between downtown and its landmarks?
The question has come up a few times over the years.
During an economic vitality meeting in 2019, Ocala Main Street officials and residents discussed a potential shuttle service that could provide transportation between various hotspots around Ocala.
Although nothing ever materialized from that discussion, Ocala-News.com thought it would pose the question to the community.
This is just a hypothetical situation, so if you believe the city should never look into an idea like this, that’s an opinion we encourage you to share.
If you think the city should explore the idea, how do you think they should go about doing it?
The ideal shuttle or trolly/taxi service might transport residents between Downtown Ocala and various locations across the city, including the Reilly Arts Center, Tuscawilla Park, the Ocala Regional Medical Center, and the Marion County Public Library, to name a few.
In the past two years, developments like the World Equestrian Center and the Ocala Wetland Recharge Park might make for logical additions to a potential route.
At the time of the discussion we attended in 2019, Polaris GEM Electric carts were discussed as the desired mode of transportation. The GEM carts are a enclosed and generally seat four to six passengers.
The service could be self-sustaining with the addition of advertisements, and could be operated by a third party company, similar to what the City of Ocala does with its valet operation.
A shuttle could even provide transportation from the current parking garage and various parts of Downtown Ocala. In recent weeks, the Ocala City Manager acknowledged that the parking situation in downtown is “critical” and briefly addressed the city’s plans to find a second parking garage.
