When Saquon Barkley faced New York media earlier this week not every question was about Giants football.
In fact, some time was spent talking Penn State. It was not football talk, though, it was all academics. Barkley made news back in early May when, keeping a promise to his parents, the star running back earned his Penn State degree.
“It’s something I wanted to accomplish, something that I had to make a promise to my mom, my dad, when I had the conversation with coach (James) Franklin that I’m going to leave school early, he made me promise that I’ll come back and get my degree, too,” he told the media.
Barkley, it turns out, made the most of the time he missed with his knee injury by catching up on his classes.
“Been banged up a little bit over the year, so I had a little extra time on my hands that I probably wouldn’t have liked, but I was able to accomplish that to get my degree,” he said.
It is an accomplishment he said he will share with the young people in his family.
“(When) she (my daughter) gets older it will make a little bit more sense to her, but not just my daughter, my nieces, my nephews, brothers and sisters, whole family,” Barkley said. “They’re excited for me, and happy that I was able to accomplish that, and I’m thankful for all of them.”
Barkley, 25, is entering his fifth year in the NFL. He was the league’s offensive rookie of the year in 2018 after rushing for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns, and also catching 91 passes for 721 yards and four more scores. He ran for 1,003 yards in his sophomore season, but suffered a knee injury and had just 19 carries in 2020.
He ran for 593 yards and two touchdowns as the Giants’ offense struggled last season.
He played his high school ball at Whitehall High before moving on to a stellar career with the Nittany Lions in which he was twice — 2016 and 2017 — name Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.
