It’s been many years since Michigan had a 100-degree reading. With the way temperatures have trended in May and June, signs are pointing toward a 100-degree day sometime this summer.
Our last 100-degree days in Michigan happened 10 years ago in June and July of 2012. It takes a very hot pattern for Michigan cities to hit 100 degrees.
But look where we have been already this year.
In late May we had two hot days with some Lower Michigan cities warming well into the 90s. Traverse City topped the list with the hottest temperature in the state on May 12 at 96 degrees. Reason number one why we should hit 100 degrees this summer: mid-May had us already only four degrees from 100 degrees, and that was in Northern Michigan.
Now we’ve had our second attempt and hitting 100 degrees just yesterday, on June 21. We were closer, but missed it again. This time we missed 100 degrees by only two degrees. The map below shows temperatures from 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 21.
Downtown Detroit hit 98 degrees officially, and Kalamazoo warmed to 97 degrees.
Look at how close 100-degree readings are to Michigan. The high temperature forecasts for this Saturday and next Friday show the near-100-degree temperatures again knocking on Michigan’s door.
The second reason we should expect at least one 100-degree day this summer is the 100-degree air is in place, and it’s just south of Michigan. Ohio, Indiana and Illinois will have some 100-degree readings in the next week. The scorching heat will only have to move 150 miles northward and Michigan will get it.
And the final reason we should mentally prepare for hitting the century mark on the thermometer is the historical hottest time of year is still a few weeks away. The hottest temperatures have occurred from the first week of July to the first week of August. The same weather pattern we had yesterday would have produced 100 degrees if it happened in July.
When would 100 degrees occur? We do have some cooler than normal weather coming next week. I would say the next round of hot will push us to 100 degrees. The next round of heat should occur sometime in the second or third week in July.
What could keep Michigan from hitting 100 degrees this summer? If the cool pattern about to kick in next week became a pattern that lasted a few months, we wouldn’t make 100 degrees. But the weather pattern established now is two weeks of heat alternating with two weeks of cool.
So you better finally have all your cooling abilities in place before the next hot round.
