How Bills’ Jake Kumerow added to rift between Aaron Rodgers and Packers - syracuse.com

Jake Kumerow, a wide receiver that signed a reserve/futures contract with the Buffalo Bills following the 2020 season, added to a rift between the Green Bay Packers and star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. It’s a rift that now has been wondering if Rodgers has played his final snap in Green Bay.

As wild as it sounds, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport stated Kumerow’s release from the Packers upset Rodgers as he wanted more say on the team’s personnel.

“This is crazy, but it does seem like the one thing that drove Rodgers nuts was when the organization released Jake Kumerow just a day after he praised him publicly,” said Rapoport. " (It’s) described as a little bit of a deathknell in the relationship.”

Rodgers essentially talked Kumerow up as an option for the Packers’ No. 4 wide receiver just one day before he was released. In an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Rodgers talked about what he loved about Kumerow as a player.

“Jake Kumerow has been such a solid performer for us the last couple of years,” said Rodgers. “I love his reliability. I think he’s a fantastic, steady player who’s very heady on the field. He makes plays, he plays with a lot of confidence and he’s a guy you love having on the squad.”

Buffalo would go on to sign Kumerow to their practice squad and later elevated him to their 53-man roster. He would be targeted once on offense, catching a 22-yard touchdown pass from Josh Allen in the Bills’ blowout win over the Denver Broncos.

When John Brown returned to the lineup, Buffalo had to release Kumerow. They had planned to sign the receiver to their practice squad, but he was claimed by the New Orleans Saints. As soon as the Saints parted ways with Kumerow, Buffalo worked on getting him back into the fold. The Bills would sign Kumerow to a reserve/futures contract shortly after their playoff run concluded.

Kumerow, otherwise known as Touchdown Jesus, will look to vie for a roster spot with the Bills this fall. His knowledge of the playbook and special teams ability gives him a chance of hanging around as the team’s final wide receiver. If he fails to land a roster spot, the Packers would be wise to claim him as long as Rodgers is still their quarterback.
