Record-crushing heat wave nears peak in Pacific Northwest - The Washington Post

datangep.blogspot.com

The most severe heat wave in the history of the Pacific Northwest is nearing its climax. The National Weather Service had predicted it would be “historic, dangerous, prolonged and unprecedented,” and it is living up to its billing as it rewrites the record books.

On Sunday, Portland, Ore., soared to its highest temperature in more than 80 years of record-keeping: 112 degrees. This new mark occurred just one day after hitting 108, which had broken the previous all-time record of 107. Seattle surged to 104 degrees Sunday, surpassing the old record of 103.

The extraordinary heat swelled north of the international border as Canada saw its highest temperature recorded Sunday afternoon, when Lytton in British Columbia surged to 116 degrees. For perspective, that is just 1 degree from the all-time record in Las Vegas.

While temperatures may have peaked Sunday afternoon in a few places, many were expected to turn even hotter on Monday or Tuesday, breaking all-time records (a number of which were initially broken Saturday and/or Sunday).

Here are the predicted highs in several major population centers along with what the current all-time high temperatures are at those locations, most of which are predicted to be broken:

Monday forecast
Tuesday forecast
All-time high (year)
112 (2021, set Sunday)
115 (1946)
104 (2021, set Sunday)
108 (1928 and 1961)

“The past is no longer a reliable guide for the future. These events are becoming more frequent and intense, a trend projected to continue,” tweeted the Oregon Climate Office.

Meteorologists have described the situation as “insane,” “bonkers” and “incredible.” The Weather Service in Seattle wrote that attempting to forecast heat this extreme is “disconcerting,” because no analogous situation has occurred in the past.

Through midweek, loads of additional high-temperature records are expected to fall, with the core of the heat focused in western Oregon and Washington state Monday before shifting to eastern areas by Tuesday and Wednesday.

Because of the heat wave’s longevity, new record-long streaks for surpassing different temperature thresholds are also occurring. For example, Seattle has experienced triple-digit heat on three straight days for the first time on record.

Officials fear that the intensity and duration of the heat wave will lead to dramatic increases in heat-related illness and possibly fatalities in a region where many lack air-conditioning (more than half the homes in Seattle lack air-conditioning). Heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States in a typical year.

Here is a running list of some of the most significant records established; we will update this daily until the heat wave is over.

All-time record highs

All-time highs are the most rare and refer to the highest temperature on record for any month at a given location.

  • Portland reached 112 degrees, topping 108 from Saturday. (Before this weekend, the previous record was 107 from 1981.)
  • Seattle reached 104 degrees, topping 103 from 2009.
  • The Dalles, Ore., reached 115 degrees, topping 111 in 1998 and 1992.
  • Roseburg, Ore., reached 113 degrees, topping 109 in 2020 and 1946.
  • Salem, Ore., reached 113 degrees, topping 108 from 1927, 1941, and 1981.
  • Troutdale, Ore., reached 112, topping 109 on Saturday. (Before this weekend, the previous record was 108 in 1977.)
  • Vancouver, Wash., reached 112 degrees, topping 108 on Saturday. (Saturday’s 108 tied a previous mark from 2009.)
  • Eugene, Ore., reached 111 degrees, topping 108 from 1981.
  • McMinnville, Ore., reached 111 degrees, topping 110 in 1926 and 1925.
  • Hillsboro, Ore., reached 109 degrees, topping 108 in 2006.
  • Shelton, Wash., reached 107 degrees, topping 104 from 2009.
  • Olympia, Wash., reached 105 degrees, tying the mark from 2009 and 1981.
  • Hoquiam, Wash., reached 103 degrees, topping 95 from 2016.
  • Astoria, Ore., reached 101, tying the mark from 1942.
  • Stampede Pass, Wash., reached 93 degrees, tying the mark from 2004.
  • Several records that were set Saturday were broken again Sunday and are listed above.

Record warm lows

Record warm lows refer to the warmest nighttime or morning minimum temperatures on record. The ones we present here are all-time (any month) cases.

  • Seattle’s low temperature Sunday morning of 73 degrees was the warmest on record for any date, topping 72 from 2009. Combined with the 104 high, the average temperature of 89 makes Sunday the hottest daily temperature on record for the city.

June record highs

These are the warmest temperatures observed during the month of June at the given locations. They are rare, but monthly records are easier to break than all-time records.

  • Medford, Ore., reached 113 degrees, topping 111 from 1992.
  • Pasco, Wash., reached 115 degrees, topping 111 in 2015.
  • Yakima, Wash., reached 108 degrees, tying 108 in 2015.
  • Renton, Wash., reached 103 degrees, topping 95 in 2007.
  • La Grande, Ore., reached 102 degrees, topping 99 in 2003.
  • Klamath Falls, Ore., reached 100 degrees, tying the mark set in 1992.
  • Bellingham, Wash., reached 95 degrees, tying Saturday’s high of 95. (Before this stretch, the June record was 93 in 1955.)
  • Several records from Saturday were re-broken Sunday and are listed with that group.

Record streaks

  • Seattle hit at least 100 degrees on three straight days for the first time on record Saturday (102), Sunday (104) and Monday.

Notable Canadian heat records

  • Lytton, British Columbia, reached 116 degrees Sunday, the highest temperature recorded in Canada in any month.
  • Kamloops, British Columbia, reached 109 degrees Sunday, the highest temperature recorded there.
  • Victoria International Airport, British Columbia, reached 99 degrees Sunday, topping the old all-time record of 97 in 2007 and 1941.
