Syracuse, N.Y. -- Syracuse has now had more 90-degree days by the end of June than any other year on record.
The temperature hit 90 degrees by 1 p.m. today, making this the 11th day this year of at least 90. That’s never happened this early in the year; the highest number of 90-degree days through the end of June had been 10. That was set in 2005, which turned out to be the hottest summer on record.
Syracuse typically gets 10 days a year of 90 or above.
This month is likely to go down in the record books as Syracuse’s third-hottest June on record, after 1949 and 2005.
And we’re not even in the hottest part of summer yet: July is typically the hottest month in Central New York, when the odds of reaching 90 degrees is highest.
In 2020, Syracuse had 21 days of 90 or greater. Just six of those came before July 1, though. The bulk of them were in July, especially during a seven-day stretch that fell one day short of the record for consecutive 90-degree days.
While afternoon highs have been scorching, Syracuse has also set three records in a row for hottest nighttime temperatures. Saturday, Sunday and Monday all ended up in the record books with what meteorologists call the maximum low temperature. That’s an important indicator, because when temperatures remain high at night, people and buildings don’t have a chance to cool off.
Studies indicate that hotter nighttime temperatures can increase the chances for stroke and heart attacks, and can cause poor sleep, which can lead to longer-term health problems.
Temperatures are likely to dip slightly on Wednesday, into the mid-80s, and then fall into the 70s later in the week.
