The Debate - Chad after Idriss Déby: A choice between stability and democracy? - FRANCE 24

Issued on:

The dust is far from settled in Chad. Ten days after longtime strongman Idriss Déby died after being wounded on the battlefield, more protests have broken out in the capital after Déby’s son was named the head of a transitional military council. We discuss the deadly crackdown on those banned demonstrations. We also take a look at France’s firm condemnation of the violence. The former colonial power cannot afford to see anti-French sentiment grow there at a time when Chad remains the centerpiece of Paris-led regional efforts to combat jihadist insurgencies.

We also take a look at the precarious truce struck with rebels who have crossed over from Libya into Chad, and who were the ones to mortally wound Déby. How can Chad be secured? What did Déby’s three decades of strongman rule really mean for the country’s stability?

In addition, we discuss the growing unrest in Burkina Faso - where three European journalists and scores of civilians have been killed in separate attacks in recent days – as well as the jihadist attack that left 12 Chadian soldiers dead in the Lake Chad region on Tuesday.

Produced by Alessandro Xenos, Juliette Laurain and Imen Mellaz.
