Still no agreement between ISU and graduate workers - HOI ABC

NORMAL (HOI) -- Graduate workers say Illinois State has still not met any of their demands. The workers' ultimate goal, to be paid what they call "livable wages."

The unions demands haven't changed much since the start of negotiations. ISU did offer a pay increase, but teaching assistant Trevor Rickerd said it came nowhere close to what they need.

"Whether it comes to housing issues, medication issues, or other financial issues, money helps...the administration has the money but they are not willing to give it to their workers to be able to manage their lives as they need, comfortably," he said.

The university disagreed, noting that its current offer for the minimum pay exceeds the average minimum at similar institutions. According to an Illinois State release, the offer for master's level worker is a $10,008 stipend. On top of that there would be a 5.03 percent increase in 2022 and a 5.05 percent increase in 2023. The school says similar universities pay $9,151 for the same work.

Despite that, on Tuesday, the union approved a strike authorization, meaning when it thinks it is necessary, members can vote on whether or not to strike.

While there is no plan to strike right now, the union does plan to discuss what a strike would mean with their members during a meeting on Friday.
