In a terse one-line statement yesterday, Middlebury College revoked the honorary degree it had awarded to former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani in 2005. The small liberal arts college in Vermont said it had communicated the news to Giuliani, a longtime confidante to President Trump who has served on Trump’s personal legal team since 2018.
In a post to Middlebury’s Facebook page on Monday, President Laurie L. Patton said the college was considering whether to revoke the degree in light of the role Giuliani played “in fomenting the violent uprising against our nation’s Capitol building on January 6, 2021—an insurrection against democracy itself.” At the protest that morning, Giuliani repeated false claims about election fraud and encouraged the president’s supporters to be violent. “Let’s have trial by combat,” he said.
Colleges frequently award honorary degrees in an effort to attract high-profile speakers. Giuliani spoke at the Middlebury commencement ceremony in 2005.
The decision to revoke a degree often involves protracted debate. In 2018, after President Trump referred to Haiti and African nations as “shithole countries,” members of the faculty at Lehigh University, a research university of 7,000 students in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, wanted to strip him of the degree it had awarded 30 years earlier. But the school’s trustees decided not to act.
Two days after the Capitol attack however, Lehigh’s trustees revoked Trump’s degree with a brief statement. The day before, Lehigh’s president, John D. Simon, had condemned the attack on Twitter as “a violent assault on the foundation of our democracy,” though he did not name President Trump. On December 8 Wagner College, a small liberal arts college in Staten Island, New York, also rescinded an honorary degree it had awarded Trump in 2004.
In 2015, a third school, Robert Gordon University, had revoked the honorary doctorate in business administration it had awarded Trump in 2010. The president of Robert Gordon, a public school in Aberdeen, Scotland, near a Trump golf resort, said Trump’s remarks while campaigning for president were “wholly incompatible with the ethos and values of the university.”
Liberty University, the giant evangelical school in Lynchburg, Virginia founded by the late Reverend Jerry Falwell, is the only institution yet to revoke Trump’s honorary degree.
Giuliani, who graduated from Manhattan College, an all-male, private Catholic school in the Bronx ,and New York University law school, also holds honorary degrees from Loyola University in Maryland, The Citadel and Drexel University.
Giuliani has made no comment on Middlebury’s decision.
