Centenary University announced on Friday it will launch a new bachelor’s degree in health science this fall.

The Hackettstown-based liberal arts university said the program was developed in response to a growing need for trained health professionals in a variety of settings.

“With the population aging, there is a growing need for health care workers,” Craig Fuller, assistant professor of health science and director of the university’s medical laboratory science program, said. “That’s an area that students, especially prospective student-athletes, have told us they’re interested in studying. The COVID-19 pandemic has also illustrated the need that’s out there right now. Here in northwestern New Jersey, there’s definitely a deficiency in the number of health care professionals needed.”

The Bachelor of Science will prepare graduates to pursue master’s degrees in related fields such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, nutrition and health education as well as entry-level roles in health care settings like a hospital, research lab, public health organization, rehabilitation facility or government agency.
