Centenary University in Hackettstown will launch a new bachelor’s degree program in health science in fall 2020.
The degree will equip graduates to pursue master’s degrees in fields such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, nutrition, and health education, as well as for entry-level jobs in health care settings such as hospitals, research laboratories, public health organizations, rehabilitation facilities, and government agencies, according to a a prepared statement from Craig Fuller, assistant professor of health science.
Fuller is also director of the Centenary‘s medical laboratory science program.
“With the population aging, there is a growing need for health care workers,” said Fuller. “That’s an area that students, especially prospective student-athletes, have told us they’re interested in studying. The COVID-19 pandemic has also illustrated the need that’s out there right now. Here in northwestern New Jersey, there’s definitely a deficiency in the number of health care professionals needed.”
Centenary’s new degree offering is part of an ongoing initiative to build on the university’s science programs and expand academic offerings in the health sciences.
In 2019, Centenary introduced a degree in medical laboratory science, and an exercise science program is approved to launch in fall 2021.
Officials are also exploring plans to introduce a new master of occupational therapy program, according to an announcement.
