By a single degree, Syracuse misses breaking a hot summer record - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. -- With just one more degree of warmth today, Syracuse would have broken a long-standing record for a long-lasting spell of heat.

But alas, today’s high peaked at 79 degrees. That means our spell of consecutive days of 80 or more ends at 43, tied with 1949 for the warmest such stretch on record.

It’s the second heat-spell record we just missed breaking this summer. Temperatures reached 90 seven days in row, from July 4 to 10. The record is eight days, set in 1973.

Another record is in sight this week, though: July 2020 will likely go down in the Syracuse record books as not just the hottest July on record, but the hottest month, period, since records began in 1902. The average temperature through today is 77.5 degrees, nearly a degree higher than the average of July 1955, which still holds the mark as the warmest month on record.

If forecasts are accurate, we’ll end the month with an average of 77.3 degrees. That’s about 6 degrees more than the normal for July of 71.3 degrees.
