Political commentator Mollie Hemingway has been nominated to receive an honorary degree next spring from Concordia University Chicago in River Forest, a university official said.

Eric Metanyi, a spokesman for the Lutheran-based university, said President Russell Dawn recently put forward Hemingway’s name to a selection committee considering nominations. Hemingway is a Fox News contributor and a senior editor for online magazine The Federalist, described as politically conservative.

The anonymous faculty panel awards honorary doctorates at its discretion and has given only one in the past three years.

Hemingway, who is not related to the historic author Ernest Hemingway, last month released her third book, “Rigged: How the Media, Big Tech, and the Democrats Seized Our Elections.”

CUC Associate Vice President for Communications & Marketing Eric Matanyi confirmed that Dawn made the nomination and said that any selections for the current academic year have not yet been decided.

In a statement, Matanyi said: “Once an honorary degree nominee accepts receipt of their award, the university will include their name in Commencement-related communications, which may include a press release, notice on the university’s website and the event program itself.”

Undergraduate Spring Commencement at CUC is scheduled for May 7, 2022; colleges typically award honorary degrees at spring undergraduate commencement.

Neither Dawn nor Hemingway responded to requests for comment.

In addition to her current book, Hemingway has written two others, including “Justice on Trial: The Kavanaugh Confirmation and the Future of the Supreme Court,” in 2019, and “Trump vs. the Media,” in 2017.

“The University receives many nominations each year, and those nominees frequently reflect a wide range of viewpoints held by our faculty and staff,” Matanyi said in his statement.

While CUC awarded no honorary degrees at its 2021 Spring Commencement or in 2019, the 2020 recipient was Karl Kreft, a wealthy benefactor who also has endowed several other higher education institutions and received numerous honorary doctorates.

Affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, CUC is a private university in River Forest with an enrollment of over 5,000 students. It is comprised of four academic colleges, including Business; Education; Health, Science & Technology; and Theology, Arts & Humanities.
