A shootout between two men Sunday afternoon in Bessemer left both of them dead.
The gunfire erupted about 3:40 p.m. in front of a house in the 800 block of 22nd Street North. That is an area that is a mixture of residential and commercial.
The names of the men have not yet been released, but Lt. Christian Clemons said one of them was 60 and the other was 62.
The two men knew each other and were arguing back and forth when both pulled guns and fired. The reason for the argument wasn’t yet clear.
One of the men was pronounced dead on the scene and the other was taken to UAB West where he, too, died a short time later.
The deaths mark Bessemer’s 26th and 27th homicides this year in Bessemer. The city ended 2020 with 18 homicides.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 185, surpassing last year’s 183 homicides with more than a month to go in the year.
