CLEVELAND -- The Detroit Lions are known for finding inventive ways to lose, but getting flagged between quarters for talking trash about someone’s mother is a new one even for them.

Left guard Jonah Jackson drew a personal foul for unsportsmanlike conduct during the commercial break between the third and fourth quarters of the 13-10 loss on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. His sin: Talking smack about Jadeveon Clowney’s mother.

“I don’t know what to tell you,” head coach Dan Campbell said. “It was something that is said. It was something about somebody’s mother, OK? And there was a lot of talking going on out there, but so it was a penalty.”

There was talking and then some going on throughout the game, and star Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett said Cleveland got inside Detroit’s head.

“You do your best to try and get in their heads, and we were able to get one on them,” Garrett said. “It was getting real chippy up until that point. You just try to get your guys composed on the sidelines so that next time you go out there, we are a little more composed than they are.”

Garrett said he didn’t hear what Jackson said, “but a your-mama joke will probably get you booked every time.”

And what a big penalty it was. The Lions were going to open the fourth quarter with a first-and-10 from Cleveland’s 42-yard line. Instead, they faced a first-and-25 from their own 43. Anyone who has seen this offense try to play football knows how big of a back-breaker that is, and two short passes and one futile run later, they punted while trailing 13-7.

They touched the ball just two more times and lost 13-10.

“First of all, I should have never even put my team in that situation,” Jackson said in a hallway outside the visitor’s locker room at FirstEnergy Stadium after the game. “But it was the heat of the moment, heat of the game. We actually chopped it up after, like apologized. It was both sides, you know what I’m saying?

“But definitely never should have been in that situation to begin with.”

The Lions have found themselves in those kinds of situations throughout the season, as well as this game. Receiver Josh Reynolds was flagged for offensive pass interference on a play where Amon-Ra St. Brown would have given Detroit the ball inside Cleveland’s 10-yard line. Cornerback A.J. Parker was flagged for pass interference on third-and-9. Cornerback Amani Oruwariye was flagged for illegal use of his hands on fourth-and-2, before getting flagged for pass interference on third-and-5, both of which would have been stops on the same drive. Instead, Cleveland scored another touchdown to make it 13-0.

And that was just the first half.

Then they cut to a commercial break before the start of the fourth quarter, and their second-year guard was flagged for jawing about someone’s mother during the break. That’s a first, even for them. And it cost Detroit at a crucial moment on the road.

“It was just trash talking in the heat of the game, honestly,” Jackson said. “Stuff happens, it’s ball. I’m going to take full responsibility for it and I should never do it again.”
