DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Jose Ureña tweaked his groin on a pitch Saturday afternoon. He left the game and is now going on the injured list.
Ureña is one of two Tigers to hit the IL between Games 1 and 2 of the doubleheader. The Tigers also placed infielder/outfielder Niko Goodrum on the 10-day injured list with calf soreness.
The Tigers recalled right-handed reliever Alex Lange and outfielder Victor Reyes from Triple-A Toledo. Both players will be in uniform for Game 2, which begins at 6:10 p.m. at Comerica Park.
Ureña had thrown three scoreless innings in the Tigers’ 1-0 win over the Twins, but informed head athletic trainer Doug Teter of the soreness upon returning to the dugout after the third.
“His right groin just grabbed on him and was sore and obviously we got him out right away,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “It’s unfortunate but now we’re going to have to deal with it.”
Ureña, 29, had struggled of late and his roster spot was thought to be precarious. Even so, his injury comes at a bad time. The Tigers currently have few healthy, unrestricted arms for the starting rotation besides Wily Peralta.
Casey Mize is facing innings restrictions; Tarik Skubal will soon be in the same category. Matt Manning is in Triple-A Toledo and is likely to be called up to start some time next week. Matthew Boyd, Spencer Turnbull and Julio Teheran are on the injured list. None of the three are thought to be close to a return.
Lange, 25, is in his third stint with the big-league club and will provide some bullpen depth this weekend. He has a 7.31 ERA in 16 innings this year, striking out 20 and walking 9.
Goodrum was in the starting lineup for Game 1 but left the field with Teter during warmups. The Tigers said he had a left calf contusion.
“This stems back to before the break when he fouled a ball off his calf,” Hinch said. “They tell me he’s got a hematoma, or bleeding in his calf, so it’s made him really sore. The body hasn’t absorbed it yet and he’s just uncomfortable moving around. Hopefully over the course of this homestand, we’ll get the soreness out of there and he can get back up and running.”
Reyes, 26, is also in his third stint with the big-league club this year. He’s been battering the baseball in Toledo but has yet to get on track in Detroit, hitting just .157 with a .451 OPS in 86 plate appearances.
