RIVERVIEW — Two people were killed and two were injured after gunfire erupted during an altercation between two groups on a Riverview street Monday, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies responded about 10 a.m. to Tribute Drive in the Covewood subdivision for reports of a shooting and found three people shot and a fourth injured in a subsequent car crash, the Sheriff’s Office said.
A man and a juvenile male had been shot in the upper body and died at local hospitals. A woman who had been shot was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. A juvenile female injured in the car crash was also taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Detectives believe the shooting occurred after an altercation between people in a car and a group riding bikes on Tribute Drive, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
A man was driving the car with two female passengers inside when he pulled up to the juvenile male riding a bike. At some point, shots were fired. The car pulled away and traveled about 150 yards before crashing, deputies said.
The Sheriff’s Office did not release the names or ages of anyone involved. The agency does not identify crime victims because of its interpretation of Marsy’s Law, a voter-approved amendment to the state Constitution that was meant to protect crime victims but that deprives the public of information long available under Florida’s public records law.
Detectives do not believe the shooting was a random act, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
