PHOENIX — An excessive heat warning was issued for most of next week in Phoenix as temperatures are expected to eclipse 115 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning will go into effect Sunday at 10 a.m. and run through 8 p.m. the following Friday because of the forecast high temperatures.

Sunday’s high is expected to reach 113 degrees. Monday is forecast for 115 degrees before a 117-degree day on Tuesday and 116 degrees on Wednesday.

During periods of extreme heat, experts advise people to stay hydrated, limit the amount of time outside, try to stay inside air-conditioned buildings and remember to check on elderly family members and neighbors.

People are also advised to watch for warning signs of heat-related illnesses, which can include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, headache and nausea.

Phoenix has yet to hit 110 degrees this year, but is on track to reach it this weekend.

Thursday’s high is forecast for 102 degrees before 106 degrees on Friday and 110 degrees on Saturday.

NWS says the first 110-degree day in Phoenix typically happens June 11.

The blistering heat comes a year after one of the hottest summers in Phoenix history.

Phoenix broke records for the most 95-degree days (172), 100-degree days (145), 105-degree days (102), 110-degree days (53) and 115-degree days (14) in a year in 2020.

July (98.9 degrees) and August (99.1 degrees) went down as the hottest months recorded in Phoenix history.

The average daily temperature for the year was 77.2 degrees, trailing only the 77.3 degree mark that was set in 2017.

Phoenix hit 100 degrees for the first time this year on May 5.

So far, the city has recorded 19 100-degree days in 2021, with a high so far of 108 on Friday and Saturday of last week.
