For Hot Technology Jobs, No Degree Required - Forbes

At the major technology companies,  a college degree and the mountains of debt that may come with it – aren’t required and may not be necessary to get your foot in the door, Business Insider reported, quoting Tesla CEO Elon Musk and other executives.

Colleges "are not for learning," but rather a place to have fun, Musk said at the Satellite 2020 conference in March, Business Insider recounted.

Musk, who holds a bachelor’s degrees in economics from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, cited Bill Gates of Microsoft and Larry Ellison of Oracle as examples of technology business leaders without degrees.

Google and Apple are hiring people without degrees but who do have the necessary skills, the story said, citing a LinkedIn finding that the hottest companies don’t require degrees.

“Even among students who graduate from college, a significant number of new graduates are underemployed,  meaning they work jobs that don't require a college degree,” Business Insider said.

Apple CEO Tim Cook in 2019 said many colleges aren’t teaching practical skills such as coding.

"All too often, job requisitions will say they require a four-year degree, when in fact there's nothing about the job that truly requires a four-year degree — it merely helped our hiring managers sort of weed through the crowd and get a smaller qualified candidate group,” Siemens USA CEO Barbara Humpton said last year, Business Insider said.

At the Satellite conference, Musk  expressed a similar opinion.

"I don't consider going to college evidence of exceptional ability," Musk said at the Satellite conference. "In fact, ideally, you dropped out and did something."
