American International College has announced a new debt relief program to former students returning to complete their degrees at the college.

According to a college release, The AIC “Buzz Back” program at American International College will give former undergraduate students an opportunity to return to complete their degree without the weight of outstanding account balances. Students enrolled in the program will have their initial outstanding balances forgiven upon completion of their degree.

“AIC was founded for the purpose of providing access to a quality education for the underserved, underrepresented people whose lives would be most transformed as a result. More than 130 years later, this mission is as relevant as ever,” AIC Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Mika Nash said.

“The Buzz Back program was designed to remove one of the most limiting barriers preventing former students from returning to complete their degrees. We are here to partner with them every step of the way.”

The program is open to undergraduate students who previously attended AIC and did not complete their degree, have not been enrolled for at least two years, and whose student accounts balances have not been placed with a collection agent.

Degree programs must be completed within six years of re-enrollment. Buzz Back students must take a minimum of six credits per semester while maintaining a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher.

Payment arrangements covering all classes taken through the Buzz Back program must be approved in advance. Buzz Back does not forgive federal student loan debt or other accounts held by third-party creditors.

According to a 2019 study by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, 36 million Americans have attended college but not completed their degree programs. They are commonly called the “Some College, No Degree” population.

Approximately 10% have been identified as “potential completers,” by attending college for at least two years before ending their enrollment.
