NY Cannabis Insider is hosting an in-person conference in Albany on May 20th. The event will feature panel discussions led by industry experts, as well as networking opportunities, a vendor fair, lightning round consultations and more. Tickets are available now.

LIM College in New York City is launching bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in “The Business of Cannabis” this fall, and just announced a slate of industry professionals who will be leading the classes.

Cannabis may not seem like an intuitive fit at LIM College — a private, for-profit school that advertises itself as being “where business meets fashion.” However, one of the faculty hired to teach the new programs said students who want to work in any part of the emerging industry will be left behind if they don’t get the opportunity to learn about all parts of it.

“If you come into this industry and you think you are going to make an impact without truly understanding how plants are grown, how genetics are developed, you will certainly be missing a lot of the picture, and the cannabis industry will recognize this real quickly,” said Jesce Horton, who will teach a class on “The Business of Cannabis Cultivation and Manufacturing.”

Horton, the CEO of cannabis craft cultivation company LOWD, is among a slate of “all-star” industry professionals that LIM College hired to join its faculty ahead of the start of its cannabis programs.

“We wanted to provide our students access to the highest achievers from various parts of the cannabis business,” said Michael Zaytsev, academic director of the Business of Cannabis at LIM. “With these cannabis all-stars joining our faculty, we are delivering on that promise.”

Also among the team of top cannabis industry professionals hired to teach for LIM College’s new programs: Cannabis advocate and business strategist Dasheeda Dawson; Branding Bud Consulting Group founder David Paleschuck; and Kristin Jordan, CEO of commercial real estate brokerage firm Park Jordan. They will teach courses on cannabis retailing, cannabis marketing and cannabis compliance, respectively.

Jordan said she’s excited to share her background in cannabis real estate. Previously the director of real estate for Acreage Holdings, she worked to select sites for cultivation, processing, and dispensary facilities — and knows firsthand the industry’s lack of knowledge on the subject.

“We did not have a lot of expertise” on the ins and outs of legal compliance for cannabis real estate, Jordan said. “Because we’re still a federally prohibited business, there are all kinds of issues with leasing property to cannabis companies.”

For one, she said, “mortgage lenders are typically FDIC-insured on the federal level, so they are not in a position to be able to allow cannabis tenants.” There are also state and municipal restrictions on cannabis facilities’ proximity to schools or churches.

These are important things to know for anyone entering the cannabis field, she said — which is how Horton feels about his cultivation course.

“I’m really giving the students a glimpse into what cultivation is all about,” Horton said.

“You have to understand the industry and culture really from seed to sale and it’s very different in every stage, from cultivation to processing to retail.”

LIM College’s bachelor’s and master’s degree programs on cannabis will launch in September.

Faculty for the cannabis degree programs also include:

  • David Abecassis, co-founder of the Green Growers Alliance;
  • Marianne Cursetjee, CEO and co-founder of Alibi Cannabis;
  • Wei Hu, CEO of MRTA Law;
  • Penelope Nam-Stephen, chief commercial officer of Community Growth Partners;
  • Melanie Nash, chief operating officer of Purple City Genetics;
