SHOSHONI, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Shoshoni are football state champions for the first time since 1985, and a major reason the Wranglers were able to bring home this year’s trophy was the connection between junior quarterback Alex Mills and junior wide receiver Trey Fike.
The pair connected for all three of Shoshoni’s touchdowns in a 19-7 victory over Rocky Mountain. The touchdowns went for two, 11 and 26 yards each.
Fike finished the game with 61 receiving yards on five catches, which was almost half of Mills’ 128 passing yards. Earlier this week, Fike said the duo’s always been “dynamic” dating back to even their youth football days.
“We’ve played sports together for so long, and we have that connection,” said Fike. “To be able to score those touchdowns and just have him as my quarterback, it was such a fun experience, and afterwards I was pretty pumped because I didn’t realize until the end of the game what I did.”
Mills said the celebration after the third touchdown between the two was “super cool.”
“Every time I looked up he was wide open,” said Mills talking about whether targeting Fike was an emphasis heading into the game. “He’s so good in space. He creates space, and the play-action I mean Pehton and Cannon running the ball so hard. They got safeties coming up five yards before they realize it wasn’t in Pehton’s hand and Trey was dancing in the end zone.”
Both Fike and Mills will return for the Wranglers next season and will have a chance to add to their touchdown collection.
