Northwoods - "This is the best weapon we have against COVID-19," said Dr. William Hartman, the principal investigator for the UW Health Moderna pediatric vaccine trial.

The COVID-19 vaccines have shown to be highly protective against the virus. Today, Pfizer released data that suggests that protection might be extended to children between the ages of 5 and 11 years old.

"Getting this group vaccinated is going to be key in helping us control this pandemic," said Hartman.

The trials show that the vaccine is entirely safe and effective for children in that age range, which is important because cases for children in that age range have recently increased by 240%.

"We don't know which kids are going to get sick from COVID," Hartman said. "We hope that none of them do, but some do and so anything we can do to keep them safe and to keep them out of hospitals is obviously the right thing to do."

Hartman says getting children vaccinated is just the way to do this. Some parents agree.

"This vaccine being available to children is hugely important to my husband and I," said Norah Brown, a parent in the Wausau School District.

Brown's kids have depended on virtual learning and minimized time with their friends since the pandemic started. She says that the opportunity to get her children vaccinated would change everything for her family.

"But we'd let them be back in school, we'd let them be active in sports and the other activities they want to participate in," said Brown.

Another parent, Kimberly Mason, has kids in a Northwoods school district. She says getting her daughter vaccinated is her number one priority. She wants those around her to do the same so that schools can stay open and children can stay safe.

"I think the families that don't want to get their children the shot, I just think they need to man up and do it," said Mason.

It's in the hands of regulators at this point. Pfizer is hopeful that the trial data is strong enough to earn them emergency authorization to get children in this age group vaccinated.

"If you or your child is eligible for a vaccine, I 100% recommend going and getting that vaccine," said Hartman.
