Seahawks defensive end Aldon Smith is wanted on a second-degree battery charge in New Orleans, per a Monday release from the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office.

According to the release, Smith — who signed with Seattle on Thursday — is the primary suspect in an incident that occurred some time Saturday evening. Per the report, police at 7:30 p.m. CT responded to a medical call in Meraux, La.; the victim said he was assaulted by an "acquaintance" earlier that evening in the New Orleans suburb of Chalmette.

The release states investigators identified Smith as the subject.

A release from St. Bernard District Attorney Perry Nicosia states Smith "caused severe injuries" to the man outside the French Press Coffee House in Chalmette. The second-degree battery charge carries a sentence of up to eight years in prison.

Smith's once-promising NFL career has been derailed by several legal issues, which caused him not to play a snap in the league from 2016-19. He played one season for the Cowboys in 2020, starting 16 games and tallying 48 tackles, five sacks and two fumble returns.
