(WSIL) -- Researchers broke down recent studies and found some concerns.
The Guardian reports nearly five percent of the 47,000 patients in one study in the United Kingdom developed diabetes.
Some experts say the virus is triggering the disease.
A Carbondale Family Physician spoke with News 3 about the issue and says a spike in blood sugar puts you at risk.
"Blood sugar itself compromises the immune system, makes the immune system weak and also uncouples the body's ability to fight infection. The problem with Covid is that it causes severe inflammation," said Dr. Dr. Anad Salem.
Scientists have many theories for what triggers that inflammation including the virus causing issues with your pancreas, intestines, or other vital organs.
Doctor Salem says he and other doctors are still experimenting with different treatments right now.
"The only evidence that has been shown besides good supportive care, and if the patient needs oxygen is steroids. We have tried, and I personally have tried in my patients in the hospital, a variety of vitamins and supplements diabetic medications anti-inflammatory medicines. So far, all of those are in the experimental stage or theoretical stage," he said.
Researchers say much more research is needed to understand the possible link between COVID-19 and diabetes.
For now Dr. Salem says it's important to get the vaccine to fight the virus and to continue social distancing and wearing masks.
