N.J.’s Charlie Puth denounces ‘screaming match between fandoms’ after criticism from BTS fans - NJ.com

Singer Charlie Puth is taking a stand against what he calls a “dangerous, toxic, internet screaming match” between music fandoms on social media.

Puth, 28, who hails from Rumson, addressed the subject on Twitter Sunday after becoming the target of criticism from BTS fans.

“I don’t usually pay any mind to things like this, but something has to be said,” tweeted Puth, who released the single “Girlfriend” on June 25.

“This dangerous, toxic, internet screaming match between ‘fandoms’ has to stop,” he said. “I’m 28 years old, so it doesn’t really mean anything to me when some person I don’t know writes a nasty message to me ... saying things like ‘I used BTS for clout’. I don’t know what that means- I love those guys and they are super talented.”

In 2018, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter performed his 2016 song with Selena Gomez, “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” with Jungkook, a member of BTS, at the MBC Plus X Genie Music Awards in Incheon, South Korea.

Before the performance with Puth, Jungkook had covered the song with Jimin, another member of the South Korean group.

“But what I do know is that 10 years ago, language like this directed towards me would’ve affected me deeply in a very negative way,” Puth said in another tweet. “And I’m thinking about all the other younger kids on twitter seeing stuff like this on a daily basis.”

“It may sound cliche, but please be nicer to each other on here,” Puth said. “No more screaming about made up nonsense. It does nobody any good. We all need to love each other MORE THAN EVER RIGHT NOW.”

In 2015, Puth, a graduate of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, topped the charts with Wiz Khalifa for their song “See You Again.” His other hit songs have included the 2016 track “One Call Away” and the 2017 release “Attention.”

Puth’s first full-length studio album, “Nine Track Mind,” reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200 in 2016. His 2018 album “Voicenotes” made it to No. 4.

In April, the New Jersey talent joined other homegrown singers, including Bruce Springsteen, for the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund’s “Jersey 4 Jersey” concert in April (Puth sang Springsteen from his bedroom at his parents’ house). On recent talk show appearances to promote his new song, Puth spoke about working with Elton John, his neighbor, at his Los Angeles home.

BTS was supposed to return to New Jersey for two huge performances, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused the cancellation of two May dates for the now-postponed BTS Map of the Soul tour at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. In January, BTS became the first K-pop group to perform at the Grammys. The group also appeared as part of the “Dear Class of 2020″ virtual graduation event with Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Beyoncé and more in June.
