Students express interest in new “Degree Progress” feature added to Student Information System - University of Virginia The Cavalier Daily

The University Registrar has added a new “degree process” feature to the Student Information System website aimed at helping students track their degree completion status through bar charts and other visuals. The feature will supplement the existing Academic Requirement Report page.

The University Registrar first described plans to add the new Degree Process function in a Jan. 24 email, but the function became available Feb. 7 under the Academics page on the SIS website.

With the new feature, students can get both a general glance of the categories that they have fulfilled, as well as more specific information about each course discipline that is required by the University.

The University currently requires students to complete general liberal arts requirements before graduation. In the College of Arts and Sciences, students in the Engagements and Disciplines pathways have their own College requirements to fulfill. The Engagements pathway includes smaller seminar classes that students take in their first year, while the Disciplines category allows students to fulfill their requirements by taking classes in six different categories — such as “Artistic, Interpretive and Philosophical Inquiry” and “The Chemical, Mathematical and Physical Universe.”

Members of the Class of 2023 and earlier also had the option to choose the traditional curriculum, in which students took courses to fulfill different requirements. Students are also required to take courses that are not in their major requirements.

The feature will supplement the existing Academic Requirement Report, which provides students with information about their degree requirements. Compared to the existing function, Degree Process adds new features like bar charts and gathers details about course requirements that attempt to provide students with visuals to illustrate their progress.

The Degree Process function can be used across University’s various schools — such as the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy, the McIntire School of Commerce, School of Education and the School of Architecture — which have their own curriculum distinct from the College of Arts and Sciences.

First-year Architecture student Chloe Liu said she is considering using the new feature in addition to existing degree planning resources available through the School of Architecture.

“As an A-School student, I often refer to a schedule planning sheet that we have,” Liu said. “But I think the Degree Process function looks better than the [Academic Requirement Report].”

Third-year Education student Michaela Ellison said she thinks the new function is more detailed and clear than the Academic Requirement Report, adding that it helps her to visualize the complex requirements in her major.

“I actually had a look at the new function when it was released,” Ellison said. “It takes a bit of time to load, but I saw that the graphs and explanations are organized much clearer than the Academic Requirement Report.”

The Degree Process feature is now available on the Student Information System website.
