Students majoring in construction and architectural technologies at the Pennsylvania College of Technology will now have the option of pursuing a new Bachelor of Architecture degree following approval of the new program by the college’s Board of Directors.
The new program adds a fifth year to the current bachelor’s degree, which allows students to advance their careers without postgraduate study. Students could be accepted into the program beginning in 2023, if not sooner, according to information released by the college. Approval of the program also allows the Construction and Architectural Technologies Division to pursue accreditation from the National Architectural Accrediting Board.
“What you’re doing today is really not approving one thing, but really two things,” Ellyn A. Lester, assistant dean of construction and architectural technologies, told the board.
“When we start the program in the fall, we would very much like to go ahead and start the process of becoming an accredited program by NAAB. There are a lot of benefits to how they can accredit our program including a faster pace for our students to acquire the licensure to become a registered architect,” Lester said.
“In fact, it will literally reduce their time to begin to pursue licensure by half. It will cut six years down to three, which is significant for our students,” she added.
Registered architects sign and seal documents, which Lester noted is critical in the commercial field.
“Any commercial project has to have a signed document from a registered architect. That allows our students to work on larger, more complex projects to earn higher salaries and find a pathway to senior leadership and potentially ownership,” she said.
“So, you see that today we’re starting the process to truly allow our students the opportunity to propel their careers forward,” she said.
Just over 100 students are now enrolled in Lester’s department and with the approval of the new program, that number is expected to increase, she said.
The accreditation process takes about six years to complete, with multiple site visits by NAAB personnel at various points throughout the five-year curriculum. When accreditation is granted it would be retroactive to the new major’s first graduating class, according to information from the college.
