MARBLEMOUNT – Travelers should prepare for lengthy daytime closures and delays this week on State Route 20, North Cascades Highway as Washington State Department of Transportation crews begin to assess the significant flood damage at milepost 113.7 just west of Sky Creek between Marblemount and Newhalem.
What can travelers expect
Beginning Tuesday, Dec. 7 through Thursday, Dec. 9 crews will close SR 20 in both directions from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for drilling. During these closures, travelers will be stopped at Bacon Creek Road and Newhalem Creek Road. There is no detour available. Emergency vehicles will be allowed access through the work zone.
Travelers can find the most up to date information on these repairs by following @wsdot_north on Twitter and should plan to avoid the area during the closures.
Outside of the closure times, both directions of SR 20 will alternate through a single lane in this location until repairs are complete.
What's happening
As a result of the heavy November rain, the eastbound lane of SR 20 in this area is slowly sliding down the hill making it unsuitable for travel. Repair work will use a large drill to access the soil beneath the damaged highway. Once it is determined how deep the unstable soils are, and where they are located, WSDOT can develop a stabilization plan for the roadway.
“Making the decision to close the highway is not something we take lightly, said WSDOT engineering manager Shane Spahr. “We need a safe space to perform the work required so we can ultimately restore the normal flow of people, goods and services just as quickly as we can.”
Additional repairs on SR 20
Multiple locations along SR 20 between Rockport and Newhalem currently require emergency repairs. Contractor crews will begin work today, Monday, Dec. 6 to replace broken concrete barriers, guardrails, and signs and fix thousands of feet of the shoulder that were damaged at mileposts 101, 110 and 115. Additional work is required to repair the embankment along the roadway.
Seasonal closure on SR 20
As a reminder, each year WSDOT crews close SR 20 North Cascades Highway during the winter as snow filled avalanche chutes pose a safety risk to travelers and road crews. Last month, crews closed the highway at milepost 134/Ross Dam Trailhead and milepost 171 Silver Star Gate. Later in the season, crews will move the western closure point back to milepost 130/Colonial Creek Campground and the eastern closure point to milepost 177/Early Winters Campground.
