For the first time ever, two of the state’s top football programs will take the field with everything on the line on Friday.
No. 1 Chelsea will square off against No. 3 Hudsonville Unity Christian for the Division 4 state championship at Ford Field in a matchup of undefeated teams.
Chelsea returns to the D4 state title game for the first time since 2018, while Unity Christian is making its first trip back to the state championship game since it won the D5 title in 2018.
The Bulldogs have never won a state championship with losses in 2018 and 2015, but will have another opportunity after beating Freeland 30-27 on Saturday.
Chelsea has only lost two games in the past three years, both of which came in the D3 state semifinals to River Rouge in 2019 and 2020.
The Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 491-168 for an average margin of victory of 24.8 points per game and they are 32 points away from setting a new school record for points in a season.

While Chelsea’s offense has been strong this season, Unity Christian’s has been historic.
The Crusaders have scored a whopping 751 points this year and are just 24 points away from breaking the state record for points scored in a season set by Orchard View (774) in 1999.
Unity Christian has also been dominant this season as it has won its 13 games by an average of 45 points per game, including a 58-8 win over No. 2 Edwardsburg in the other semifinal on Saturday.
Last season, Unity Christian appeared to be on its way back to the state finals but saw its season end because of COVID-19 concerns ahead of the district final round.
The Crusaders will be making their second trip to the state championship game and have not lost a game on the field since the D4 state semifinals in 2019 (20 straight wins).
